DOH urges parents for children vaccination, proper sanitation

CITY OF SAN FERNANDO, Pampanga — Department of Health (DOH) urges parents, guardians and caregivers to have their children vaccinated and practice a clean environment in communities.

“Oral Polio Vaccine (OPV) shall be given to children at 6, 10, 14 weeks of age, and Inactivated Polio Vaccine at 14 weeks of age,” DOH Regional Director Cesar Cassion said.

Children under 5 years of age who have not yet completed their doses of OPV shall be brought to health centers. Vaccines are given and administered for free.

“We call on parents to strictly follow their child’s immunization schedule to be able to benefit from the protection that vaccines generate,” he added.

For her part, Local Health Support Division Chief Lailani Mangulabnan said health workers deployed in local government units are also conducting house-to-house administration of vaccines to cover large population of unprotected children.


Routine Immunization will be more strengthened in the region although it is polio-free.  

DOH is also working on herd immunity in communities by covering at least 95 percent of the population.

Herd immunity refers to a form of protection from infectious diseases that occurs when a large percentage of a population is vaccinated against vaccine-preventable diseases, unvaccinated individuals within that community are likewise protected.

Poliovirus may be transmitted through oral-fecal route, therefore the continuous regular surveillance of the health department in individuals and in the environment. Water samples obtained from the cities of Angeles and San Fernando were negative of the virus.

DOH encourages everyone to practice vigilance on their health— always observe environmental sanitation through zero open defecation, ensure safe drinking water, cook food thoroughly, and practice proper hand washing and good personal hygiene. (CLJD/CJFV-PIA 3)
