DOST extends scholarship application for 3rd year college students

BALANGA CITY — Department of Science and Technology (DOST) extended the deadline for the filing of application for the Junior Level Science Scholarship (JLSS) program intended for incoming third year college students in academic year 2020-2021.

The new deadline for filing of application for the scholarship grant is on May 29, 2020, while the nationwide simultaneous competitive examination is scheduled on October 24, 2020.

“Applicants to JLSS must be enrolled in identified priority science and technology courses,” DOST Bataan Provincial Director Catalina De Leon-Cruz stated.

The program aims to provide scholarships to financially support the education of deserving students from their third year of college until they finish their degree.

De Leon-Cruz said interested student applicants are no longer required to visit their office or any DOST office for the application as the agency launched an e-application portal of DOST’s Science Education Institute which can be accessed at https://www.science-scholarships.ph/.

“At their own convenience at home, applicants may file their application online. First, they should access the e-application portal, then accomplish the required information and upload supporting documents,” De Leon-Cruz explained.

Based on the applicants’ qualifications, they may choose from the three component programs of JLSS which include RA 7687 program for poor, talented and deserving student who belongs to a family whose socio-economic status does not exceed the set values of certain indicators; Merit program, which gives chance to students with high aptitude in college but socio-economic status exceeds the set values for RA 7687 applicants; and RA 10612 for applicants who are willing to teach science, sechnology, engineering or mathematics subjects in secondary schools.

The provincial director added that applicants should have a general weighted average of at least 83% or its equivalent in the first year and the first semester of the second year in college.

Moreover, JLSS scholars will receive PhP7,000 monthly stipend, PhP10,000 book allowance per academic year, PhP40,000 tuition fee subsidy per academic year for those enrolled in private higher education institutions, PhP10,000 thesis allowance, group accident insurance, and PhP1,000 graduation allowance.
