The Palace has remained silent over the killing of Mayor Rolando Espinosa of Albuera, Leyte inside the Baybay city jail last Saturday, but vowed to work on ensuring the safety of his son, Kerwin.
Malacañang said it would issue a statement over the incident after all the investigations are concluded.
According to Communications Secretary Martin Andanar, President Duterte has already been briefed on the killing of Espinosa, who he said was supposedy to have been a “big help in the government’s campaign against those involved in illegal drugs.
Meanwhile, the National Bureau of Investigation (NBI) has been ordered to probe the incident parallel to the nvestigation being conducted by the Philippine National Police (PNP).
According to Justice Secretary Vitaliano Aguirre II, this is “to avoid any suspicion of whitewash.”
The Senate is also expected to initiate an inquiry into the killing of Espinosa.
Earlier, Sen. Panfilo Lacson said the killing of Espinosa should prompt the Senate to reopen its investigation on extrajudicial killings (EJKs).
