SAN LUIS, Pampanga — Members of the Pampanga Mayors League (PML) led by their president, Lubao Mayor Mylyn Pineda-Cayabyab on Wednesday expressed support to the town of San Luis which is reeling from the effects of bird-flu.
Mayor Cayabyab said visiting San Luis is the least the group can do to help the town to bounce back from the blows of avian influenza that impacted severely on its local chicken, duck and egg production.
The mayors ate chicken arrozcaldo, fried duck and balut for brunch to show that local poultry produce here are safe for human consumption.
Mayor Cayabyab told San Luis Mayor Venancio Macapagal that public fear in eating poultry products coming from the town will soon fade out and the public will go back to buying and consuming chicken and eggs.
Guagua Mayor Dante Torres suggested that the PML issues a resolution asking for a reinvestigation eith thorough research on the suspected bird-flu cases to determine if indeed it was avian influenza that afflicted fowls in Pampanga.
Torres said it is unlikely that the chicken, especially layers, can be infected by flu because these are regularly vaccinated.
He also appealed to the media to explain to the public that the suspected bird flu cases do not cover the whole of Pampanga and that the infected areas are of minimal effect to the overall population of chicken and ducks in the province.
Mayor Cayabyab, in an interview, urged the Departments of Health and Agriculture to help clear Pampanga from the misinformation that the whole province was stricken by bird flu.
She said that businesses investing on poultry regardless of size have been adversely affected by the undue fear that reports about bird flu have sown on the public.
“Kung ang DA ang nagdeklara ng outbreak sa Pampanga, sana ngayong naglift na ng ban, sila na rin an magdeklara na clear ang mga bayan na wala naman talagan bird flu cases,” Cayabyab said.
The mayors are planning to submit a resolution to President Rodrigo Duterte on Monday during the Chief Executive’s visit to Pampanga.
