POPCOM offers free online learning for teens, couples in Region 3

CITY OF SAN FERNANDO, Pampanga (PIA) — Commission on Population and Development (POPCOM) developed a series of Self-Paced Online Seminars and Sessions on Adolescent Health and Development (AHD) and Responsible Parenthood and Family Planning (RPFP) to continuously reach out to stakeholders even during the Enhanced Community Quarantine period.

“We should familiarize ourselves with the new normal and try to optimize the use of social media and other online learning platforms to advocate the programs we have under the Philippine Population Management Program,” POPCOM OIC-Regional Director Vicky Barbea De La Torre said.

The use of the digital technology or online learning platforms was conceived as an alternative to activities put on hold for the rest of the year due to the pandemic.

“We constantly aim to reach intended audiences and disseminate accurate information thus now, in the comfort of their own homes and in the platform that they all use,” De La Torre added.

Developed materials are “self-paced” with the intention to educate and fill in gaps in knowledge and experience.

They are constructed in a way that learners progress on the topic at their own speed. They can go quickly and slowly as they want and will gain a certificate after each topic completion.

The goal for the Online Self-Paced Seminars on AHD is to provide adolescents with accurate and relevant information on puberty and growing-up, human sexuality, positive and responsible sexual behavior, healthy lifestyle and effective parent-teen communication among others. The seminars also tackle undesirable impacts of early sexual involvement, teenage pregnancies, early marriages, and sexually transmitted infections.

RPFP sessions, on the other hand, offer couples and individuals adequate and reliable information on nurturing marriage and relationship, responsible parenthood, fertility awareness and family planning. These sessions mainly aim to help achieve fertility intentions specifically on the number, timing, and spacing of children within the context of responsible parenthood and informed choice.

“We call everyone to expand knowledge and nurture family relationships using these online learning materials,” she furthered.
