BALANGA CITY – A total of 154 defective weighing scales were destroyed this morning by an enforcement group led by DTI Bataan, Bataan Consumer Affairs Council, and the city government here at the Balanga City Public Market.
Rudy De Mesa, city administrator and chief of the City Economic and Investment Development, DTI Bataan OIC-provincial director Nelin Cabahug and other local officials here led the activity.
De Mesa told 1Bataan. com that the defective scales were confiscated during saturation drives in their public market by the city government of Balanga for the past five years.
Cabahug said that the defective weighing scales are confiscated to protect buyers, especially in public markets. Penalties are imposed and the scales must be repaired before they are reused.
Those that have not been claimed by their respective owners and those that are patently non-repairable are then destroyed to avoid being reused to the disadvantage of the buying public.
Bataan local media partners, market vendors and other concerned sectors also witnessed the event.
Cabahug also reminded the vendors and buyers of the rights and responsibilities of consumers under Republic Act 7394 or the Consumer Act of the Philippines.
After the activity, DTI and city officials met the local press at the “Kapihan sa DTI Bataan” held
at the Crown Royale Hotel. Mr. De Mesa briefed the media about the latest development in the city public market particularly the enforcement of their new city market code. –MHIKE CIGARAL
