Bulacan to inspect giant water tanks in the province

CITY OF MALOLOS, Bulacan – Gov. Wilhelmino M. Sy-Alvarado said that the provincial government and the Sanguniang Panglalawigan headed by Vice Gov. Daniel Fernando will conduct a public hearing in aid of legislation concerning the structural integrity of giant water tanks of different water districts in the province in the wake of the collapse of the water tank in Bgy. Muzon, City of San Jose del Monte early this month where four persons, two of them one year old girls and injuring 44 others.

Alvarado said that public safety is the utmost concern here and timely measures should be applied to prevent such tragedy from happening again.

Vice Gov. Fernando said that Board Member Allan Rey Baluyot will schedule the public hearing that will lkead to the filing of a provincial resolution.

Fernando said that the Task Force formed by the city government of San Jose del Monte is presently inspecting the facilities of various water districts in the area. He said that the provincial government will also inspect giant water tanks in the province’s 21 towns and 3 cities especially the old ones and those located in populated areas.

City police chief Supt. Fitz Macariola said that the incident happened at around 3:30 Friday morning. Big volume of water burst and swept thru residential and a nearby police detatchment like a tidal wave according to witnesses.

Rescuers brought the injured to the different hospitals in the city where they are still under going treatment while the fatalities were recovered under debris, police investigators said,

The structure is 14 by 13 meters in height and has a 2,000 cubic meter capacity. The SJDM Water District is headed by General Manger Loreto Limcolioc.

Water gushing from the collapsed tank deatroyed several commercial and residential houses and swept motorcycles and a police car from the adjacent police detachment.

In his weekly radio program with Bulakenyo broadcaster Rommel Ramos, Gov. Wilhelmino M. Sy-Alvarado said that an inspection of other big water tanks not only in this city but in the other water districts will be conducted to ensure that their structural integrity is safe and durable. —EMIL GAMOS
