The Katipunan da ring Talasaliksik at Talaturung Kapampangan (KATATAGAN Inc.) in coordination with the Museum of Philippine Social History is set to hold a free lecture on how church bells played an important role to the Mabalacat community from 1712 to 1898.
This is based on the research study conducted by Marc Lorenz Rivera, the guest speaker, entitled ‘Reduccion bajo de las Campanas: A Valuation of the Language and Role of the Bells during the Spanish Colonial Mabalacat, 1712-1898.’
Rivera, 22, native of Mabalacat City finished Bachelor of Arts in History as Cum Laude in University of the Philippines Baguio. He is currently teaching in Holy Angel University in Angeles City.
“Church bells had been part of the Philippine history for more than 300 years and they had become witnesses of vital episodes in the past. This thesis delved into understanding the language of the bells—the order of a particular sound.
These colonial instruments have long communicated important information to the surrounding community, within Mabalacat.
Particularly during the Spanish colonization, the community relied on the sound to know about the events of the town such as births and baptisms, matrimonies, and deaths, customary activities ecclesiastical services, and curfew. Thus, church bells played an important, specific role in Spanish colonial Mabalacat,” Rivera stated in the research abstract.
The lecture is scheduled on December 9, 9:30a.m. to 11:00a.m at the Museum of the Philippine Social History Audio Visual Room.
