In celebration of Buwan ng Wika, the 2nd leg of the Terno Contest (TernoCon) 2019 officially launched its exhibit tour at the Event Center of the SM City Clark from Aug 2 to 9.
The exhibit is in partnership with the Cultural Center of the Philippines (CCP) and Bench (Suyen Corporation).
CCP Chair Margie Moran-Floirendo, during her speech, said Ternocon 2019 is a terno-making convention and contest for regional designers initiated by the CCP through its Cultural Exchange Department and its partner Bench.
TernoCon 2019 exhibit tour is now putting 60 out of its 100 terno pieces on display at SM City Clark.
The contest aims to encourage the use of the terno as a formal dress, to inspire a new generation of Filipino designers to make ternos that are grounded in the history of the Philippine national dress, and to motivate regional designers to create works that are at par with the construction techniques of the masters.
“There is a long history about the terno. It is not just fashion, there is a discipline in creating the garment,” Moran-Floirendo said.
“We need to pass on those stories. And the exhibit being housed by SM Supermalls, it made the story-telling easier and accessible,” she added.
The 1st leg was showcased at the SM Mall of Asia last June 11.
Spearheaded by Project Director Gino Gonzales, the exhibit for TernoCon here at Clark is divided into three sections; the use of black, white, or gray; the use of jewel colors; and incorporation of indigenous weaves or textiles.
During the launching, Kashieka endorser and Kapamilya Actress Bea Alonzo, Kapuso Star Lovi Poe, Bench owner Ben Chan led the ribbon cutting ceremony of the TernoCon exhibit. –Photos by JP Manalang
