Mabalacat farmer giving fruit fly trapper to mango growers

Alex Layson, an agricultural extension worker in the city government of Mabalacat in Pampanga has been giving away improvised Fruit Fly Trapper w/ Methyl Eugenol (ME) to mango growers in Pampanga for free.

According to Harbest Agribusiness Corporation (HAC), fruit flies are known to attact over 150 kinds of fruits & vegetables including papaya, mango, avocado, banana, squash, patola, cucumber, eggplant & melon.

“Female fruit flies love to lay their eggs under the skin of host fruits & vegetables & these eggs turn into maggots that tunnel through and eat the flesh of the vegetables & fruits,” HAC added.
As a result, fruit fly infestation has been affecting the crops of large scale and backyard gardeners in the province.

Instead of using expensive and hazardous chemical pesticides, Layson formulated his do-it-yourself organic fruit fly trapper and gives it away to co-farmers without asking anything in return.

Aside from the DIY fruit fly trapper, Layson is also known for his Mango Vinegar. It took him almost three years to perfect the fermentation and formulation of the mother vinegar.
