CITY OF SAN FERNANDO – About P300,000 worth of defective Christmas lights being sold in different stalls in Angeles City market were destroyed by the trade officials on Thursday in the presence of various stakeholders days after its confiscation.
Pampanga Acting director of the Department of Trade and Industry Elenita Ordonio said a total of 2,000 medium-size boxes carrying imported x’mas lights, earlier seized during simultaneous raids in nearby markets in the province, were destroyed to send strong message to unscrupulous enterprising individuals not to engage in substandard products.
“This is to remind unscrupulous businessmen and the public to avoid buying substandard and uncertified Christmas lights that will put the lives and properties in danger,” said Ordonio.
Yuletide season is also the time where imported x’mas lights flooded the markets. The public patronizes these products because it’s cheaper as compared to standard products, said another DTI employee who declined to be named.
Despite government sincere campaign against defective Christmas lights, Ordonio said major trding centers and market stall owners openly display this item for sale. She said most of this products are imported coming from China.
“These Christmas lights were imported from China and were possibly smuggled to the country,” Ordonio added.
Ordonio urged consumers to always check the labels and quality before purchasing the products as she reminded retailers to only sell quality products that comply with the standards law.
So far no arrest had been made nor formal case had been filed in court against violators.
