Matuang Bale Cafe & Arts Studio: Kapampangan Arts Sanctuary

Pampanga’s rich cultural heritage has long inspired its artists, yet for many years, they lacked a permanent venue to showcase their talents. Local creators often displayed their works in temporary spaces like malls, hotels, and even Clark International Airport (CRK)—fleeting opportunities that, while valuable, never fully captured the depth and continuity of Kapampangan artistry.

That changed with the grand opening of Matuang Bale Cafe and Arts Studio on November 30. Located in the old Essel Supermarket, which has been beautifully renovated, this new cultural hub in the City of San Fernando combines history, creativity, and community under one roof.

In addition to the café, Matuang Bale houses the Villa Rosa Flower Shop and a showroom featuring world-class artworks by Kapampangan artists. Open daily from 8 AM to 10 PM, the venue is located at Building 18, Consunji Street, City of San Fernando, Pampanga.

Thanks to the vision and generosity of Marco and Aida Lazatin, along with their son Jonathan, this space now stands as a year-round sanctuary for Kapampangan art and culture.

A Place to Call Home

“Matuang Bale,” which translates to “Old House,” is more than just a gallery—it is a vibrant hub where tradition and innovation converge. The space provides a permanent showroom for local artists to display their works (Pidayit by Philip Torres Prizmic Brill Triboa Bay Living JCL Furniture Trading Vulcan Resources Inc. Unlike transient exhibitions in malls, hotels, and airports, Matuang Bale offers a place for artists to showcase their works year-round, inviting visitors to linger, engage, and immerse themselves in the essence of Kapampangan creativity.

More Than Art

While still in its early stages, Matuang Bale is envisioned to be a living art space where visitors can experience the creative process firsthand in the future. For now, it serves as a cozy café offering a selection of breads and pastries, providing a warm, welcoming atmosphere that complements Pampanga’s culinary heritage.

The Lazatin family’s initiative underscores their commitment to preserving and celebrating local traditions. Under Jonathan Lazatin’s guidance, Matuang Bale is set to evolve, offering curated exhibitions, interactive art experiences, and fostering a sense of community.

A Cultural Shift

Matuang Bale represents a shift in how Kapampangan art is valued and experienced. No longer limited to fleeting exhibits, it now enjoys a permanent home where it can flourish year-round.

For the artists, it is a dream realized. For the community, it is a cultural treasure. And for visitors, it offers an unforgettable journey into the heart of Kapampangan creativity—one brushstroke, one sculpture, and one pastry at a time.
