ANGELES CITY — The city government here, under the leadership of Mayor Carmelo ‘Pogi’ Lazatin Jr., is utilizing black soldier fly technology to produce organic fertilizer, which is given for free to farmers and residents.
Black soldier flies decompose various types of organic waste and converts them into high-value biomasses such as oils and proteins.
One of the emerging technologies in bio-waste management, the black soldier flies convert organic waste into high quality nutrients for pet foods, fish and poultry feeds, as well as residue fertilizer for soil amendment.
According to concurrent City Environment and Natural Resource Officer and Environmental Management System Head City Engineer Donato Dizon, this is part of the city government’s plan to reduce organic waste.
He also added that local farmers and residents can avail one kilo of organic fertilizer produce by these black soldier flies at the City Agriculture Office.
“Libre po na pinapamigay ang mga organic fertilizers na ito para sa ating mga magsasaka at kahit po sa mga residente na gagamitin po sa kanilang mga household gardens,” Engr. Dizon said.
Mayor Lazatin pushed for this program to materialize as the city government continues to find ways to divert and lessen the waste that is being disposed at the landfill.
To recall, Lazatin also launched “Walang Plastikan: Plastic Palit Bigas” project to encourage Angeleños to practice proper waste segregation and disposal.
“Kagaya po ng Walang Plastikan project po natin, itong black soldier fly technology po natin ay paraan po para mabawasan po ang mga basurang tinatapon po natin sa landfill,” Lazatin said.
To start the black soldier fly technology, offices from the city government, and some nearby business establishments in the City Hall turned over their biodegradable waste at the Central Composting Facility to show their support for the said project.
Meanwhile, Engr. Dizon said that the Central Composting Facility is open for everyone who wants to turn over their biodegradable waste and help the city in this project.
“Dalhin lamang po dito sa Central Composting Facility ang inyong mga nabubulok na basura para magtuluy-tuloy po ang proyektong ito,” Engr. Dizon stated.
In fact, some local government units, national agencies, and business establishments coming from Pangasinan, Davao, Metro Manila, Caloocan, and Tarlac already visited the Central Composting Facility to benchmark this initiative of the city government.
