De Lima is ‘immoral’, says the President

HUM a song of Tom Jones’ ‘Delilah’. ‘ Why, why Delilah’. Methinks it’s a big assault on reason why the one who is supposed to be investigated is doing the investigation.

Every legislative body throughout the whole has an ethics committee, which purpose is to investigate erring members. Let’s assume that Senator Leila De Lima is not involved in the illegal drug trade, but according to President Rody Duterte, she is ‘immoral’. When the lady senator got the presidential bashing, she may have frantically called a media conference and there she denied the allegations, however, admitting none except some ‘snippets’ of what was hurled.

The next question among our dear readers is, would that ‘snippet’ be about her relationship with Ronnie Palisoc Dayan, her driver and alleged lover? “Most likely,” said many who know how to read between the lines. There’s nothing wrong with two people falling in love. But there’s something wrong when the man is legally married. And it should be a cause for concern when the woman is a member of an august body.

When leaders are not held accountable for their behaviors, it isn’t really what the law says. The next possible step to be taken is for the ethics committee of the Senate to convene and the whole membership should now be in discussion if to put or not De Lima on the hot seat . If the Senate, though widely known as a”boys’ club” will renege on its fundamental duty, then the senators failed on this score.

The many citizens, mostly from the grassroots, may not be complaining. But where are the bishops, the women of Gabriela and the human rights advocates? The wife of Mr. Dayan who’s no match in power vs. a powerful person must be suffering in silence and just accepting her fate.
