Defective weighing scales destroyed in Olongapo

OLONGAPO CITY – Seventy-five confiscated defective weighing scales from different markets in the city were destroyed here on Thursday morning by the city government in an effort to protect consumers from dishonest market vendors.

Olongapo City Mayor Rolen Paulino, along with Department of Trade and Industry (DTI) Zambales provincial director Leonila Baluyot and Olongapo Consumer Affairs Council (OCAC) president Sherlita Emeterio watched as a back hoe pounded the weighing scales to pieces.

Paulino said OCAC and DTI Zambales worked closely with the city government in the random saturation drive conducted to get these defective and unregistered weighing scales off the markets .

Emeterio said there were many more confiscated weighing scales but these were mostly unregistered ones and will be returned to owners for proper registration with the City Treasurer’s Office.

Baluyot, on the other hand, assures the DTI is doing its share in making sure consumers are protected from unscrupulous businessmen. (Dante M. Salvana)
