MIASCOR contract nixed over luggage pilferage

CLARK FREEPORT ZONE – Passengers passing through the Clark International Airport will have a sigh of relief as the government will no longer renew the contract of MIASCOR Groundhandling Corporation following incidents of luggage theft.

MIASCOR, a ground handler for various airlines, operates at Clark airport and the Ninoy Aquino International Airport (NAIA). MIASCOR’s contract signed on July 8, 2014 will reportedly expire on March 31.

In a letter sent to Mr. Fidel Herman Reyes, President of the MIASCOR Groundhandling Corporation, dated January 19, 2018, Mr. Eddie V. Monreal, General Manager, of the Manila International Airport Authority (MIAA), told the groundhandler that its contract “shall no longer be renewed.”

“Following the expiration of the Lease and Concession Agreement dated July 8, 2014 between MIAA and MIASCOR Groundhandling Corporation last March 31, 2017, please be advised that the Agreement shall no longer be renewed,” the letter stated.

Monreal also urged MIASCOR to “please vacate and return all premises occupied by MIASCOR inside the Airport Complex and its Terminals within sixty days from date.”

It is not known, however, if MIASCOR has a separate contract with the Clark International Airport Corporation.

On January 10 this year, an indignant Filipino passenger identified as Mr. Jovinal C. Dela Cruz, 34 yrs old, of 196 Guijo St., Bunsuran, 1st Pandi, Bulacan, took to social media Facebook where he showed his three luggages and one balikbayan box – all of which were emptied.

Dela Cruz arrived at the Clark airport on December 23, 2017 with Ms. Rosemarie Campo Versoza, 36 yrs old, of Green Place Home, Imus, Cavite, on December 23, 2017 via Jet Star Flight No. 3K 779 from Singapore.

When Dela Cruz returned to Clark airport to claim his luggages and Balikbayan box on January 10, 2018, he found out that the three luggages and one box were forcibly opened and its contents were also missing.

In a separate statement, MIASCOR said it “sincerely regret the recent incident at Clark International Airport and we again extend our sincere apologies to Mr. Jovenil Dela Cruz. MIASCOR Management immediately reached out to him upon learning about this unfortunate incident and we have already reached an amicable settlement.

“The Company, together with airport authorities, also acted very quickly and placed those allegedly involved under preventive suspension. They have since been terminated and criminal and administrative charges have been filed against them.’

President Rodrigo Duterte had earlier warned he would fire airport officials if similar cases of theft crop up anew.
Duterte has also apologized to Dela Cruz for the luggage theft at Clark airport. He called a meeting with airport and transportation officials to resolve the luggage theft issue on Thursday.

“There was a meeting yesterday in Malacañang. We were called by the Office of the President….The President wants to put a stop to this (luggage theft),” Monreal said.
