BALER, Aurora — The National Museum of the Philippines (NMP) previewed its newest cultural hub in Baler, marking a major advancement in promoting heritage education, sustainable tourism, and environmental awareness in the region.
The soft launch coincided with the 23rd Philippine-Spanish Friendship Day and the 127th Anniversary of the Siege of Baler, highlighting the importance of historical reflection and cultural diplomacy.
NMP Director-General Jeremy Barns said that Baler has a unique blend of natural beauty and cultural heritage that makes it an ideal location for a national museum site.
“We are proud to share our vision of NMP Baler. It’s a place where culture and nature come together in celebration of a diverse yet unifying heritage,” he said.
The museum, designed by renowned architect Ed Calma, reflects the natural landscape of the Sierra Madre mountain range, the nearby Pacific Ocean, and the presence of indigenous communities.
It will feature ethnographic displays, regional artifacts, and selections from the national collection, showcasing Aurora’s distinct historical narratives and ecological wealth.
“This building, therefore, is both striking and grounded, a landmark that reflects the natural grandeur and geological richness of this province,” Barns added.
He also invited stakeholders and community members to contribute ideas, expectations, and aspirations to shape NMP Baler into a space for meaningful encounters between people, histories, and ideas.
“Your contributions will be vital in shaping this museum’s role as a dynamic and responsive institution for the people it serves,” Barns furthered.
The initiative is aligned with Republic Act No. 11333 or the National Museum Act of the Philippines, which mandates the establishment of regional museums and satellite offices in each administrative region outside the National Capital Region.
Set to open to the public later this year, the Baler museum is expected to become a key center for cultural engagement, learning, and environmental appreciation across Central Luzon and beyond. (MJSC/MJRD, PIA Region 3- Aurora)
