CITY OF SAN FERNANDO – Unidentified motorcycle-riding-gunmen shot dead Saturday a village chief of Barangay Concepcion, San Simon, Pampanga during an ambush shortly before noon, authorities said.
Police identified the victim as Sonny Simbulan, 56, former president of Association of Barangay Captains (ABC) in San Simon town.
The victim, police said had just stepped out from his car to buy foods in nearby store adjacent to Barangay Hall when unidentified motorcycle riding-in-tandem gunmen opened fire fatally hitting him past 10 a.m.
The suspects accelerated after the incident, stated in the police report.
Sonny’s younger brother Isagani, 40, said the incident happened in time where personnel from the Commission on Elections (Comelec) visited his brother.
SImbulan lost in the mayoralty race during recent elections as an independent candidate. He served more than nine years as Barangay Concepcion chairman.
Isagani said his brother confided to him on the death threats received specifically during the recent political exercises.
“Sigurado politika ang nasa likod ng pagpapatay sa aking Kuya kasi mabait po siya at walang kagalit o kaaway sa aminig lugar,” said Isagani over the phone.
Police investigators have yet to come-up with the result of its probe but not ruling out politics as among possible motives behind the gun-slay.
Police recovered spent shells from unknown firearm at the crime scene.
The victim’s remain lies at St. Peter Funeral home in nearby Sto. Tomas, Pampanga.
