USAID underscores Pinoy children’s health in eliminating tuberculosis

CITY OF SAN FERNANDO, Pampanga — United States Agency for International Development (USAID) stressed the prioritization of Filipino children’s health as a leap towards eliminating tuberculosis (TB).

In her message during the Isang Libong Aklat, Isang Libong Bata, Isang Libong Buhay virtual event co-organized by USAID’s TB Platforms Project and Department of Health in partnership with Philippine Information Agency,  Chief of Party Marianne Calnan said children’s health should be a matter for profound concern and requires concerted action.

“Despite all the other challenges policymakers and healthcare providers are facing today, from how they navigate the implementation of Universal Health Care, or how they confront the physical and societal challenges amidst this COVID-19 pandemic, they must not allow the health and well-being of our next generation to be neglected or overlooked,” she emphasized.

“The foundation for every aspect of human development–the physical, the intellectual, and the emotional are laid in early childhood. Much that happens during this early years has life-long effect on many aspects of health and well-being,” she furthered.

“If we don’t get children’s health right we will never have a healthy adult population in the Philippines,” Calnan added.

For this reason, she encouraged everyone to work hand-in-hand to make sure that no child should be left behind.

“May we continue to preach out children’s health at the heart of our interventions to eliminate TB in the Philippines,” she said.

Serving as the highlight of the virtual event was the turn-over of the Tibay ng Dibdib storybook to daycare centers in Dinalupihan, Bataan. It documents the story of two sisters from Bulacan who survived TB at their very young ages – two and seven years old.

USAID’s TB Platforms in partnership with Rogaciano Mercado Memorial Hospital prepared the storybook which details the challenges of the family in coping up with the treatment.

It explains how the family found out that their first daughter’s more than two weeks of cough and fever was because of TB. After several consultations and laboratory tests, they later found out that their elder daughter has TB as well.
