‘Weather, weather lang’

‘Like a circle in a spiral, like a wheel within a wheel, there’s no ending nor beginning of an ever spinning wheel…’ ( ang buhay ng tao parang gulong)

That’s the opening line in the song composed by Michel Legrand which was the theme music of that beautiful 1968 movie “Thomas Crown Affair” that starred Steve McQueen and Faye Dunaway.

As this piece was being written, former President now Pampanga 2nd district Congresswoman Gloria Macapagal Arroyo is on a jet plane and is on her way to Germany for medical treatment and maybe some pleasure trips on her way back home.

And at the same time, while I am pounding the key pads, the news blurting on radio and television is that Senator Leila De Lima, former justice secretary during the unlamented Noynoy Aquino administration, was ousted as head of the justice committee in the Senate and faces a congressional investigation on her alleged links with the drug lords now locked at the New Bilibid Prison in Muntinlupa City.

A total of 30 witnesses, some from the Justice Department, National Bureau of Investigation and high profile inmates, accused Senator De Lima through sworn affidavits that she was a recipient of drug money during her incumbency as DOJ secretary. The possibility is so strong that she may land in jail and be incarcerated, according to some lawyers.

Retro: It was then DOJ Secretary Leila De Lima who tasked the immigration people not to allow Macapagal-Arroyo from leaving the country despite an order from the Supreme Court allowing her to travel. So the former president was placed under hospital arrest and only breathed freedom after so many torturous years at the hospital.

And of course, in both cases, it only goes to show that in this world there is indeed a truism in the saying “what goes around, comes around”. In the words of former President Joseph Estrada: ‘weather, weather lang’.
