Cardiac Rehab: A work of HEART

Getting back to your normal life after a heart attack entails quite a process. It starts with lifestyle modification and regular exercise.

One of the best things you can do for yourself is to get into a cardiac rehabilitation program, a medically supervised program to help you improve your health and well-being and change your lifestyle habits through exercise training, education and counseling.

At The Medical City Clark, Cardiac Rehabilitation is a customized program of exercise and education, the goal of which is to help patients regain strength, prevent their condition from getting worse as well as to reduce the risk of future heart problems. TMC Clark’s Cardiac Rehabilitation & Secondary Prevention Program or CARES adds up to a better quality of life.

TMC Clark’s CARES is managed and supervised by a multi-disciplinary team led by Dr. Jeffrey L. Patawaran and composed of cardiologists, physiatrists, psychiatrists, nurses, physical therapists, dietitians, pharmacists, and other allied health workers. Dr. Patawaran is a Cardiologist and a Cardiac Rehab specialist.

Eligible Patients who will benefit from the Cardiac Rehabilitation Program include patients who arePOST CABG/Valve Surgery (Heart Surgery), Acute Myocardial Infarction (Heart Attack), Post PCI/Angioplasty, Heart Failure (compensated), Chronic Stable Angina and Peripheral Artery Disease.

The expected outcome of the program includes improvement in exercise tolerance, symptoms, control of risk factorspsychological well-being, reduction of stress, along with the cessation of cigarette smoking and reduction in mortality.

TMC Clark CARES involves three phases in order to realize these expected outcomes.

Phase I is aimed at preventing the harmful effects of prolonged bed rest. While the patient is still in the room, physical therapy activities are started by encouraging early sitting, standing, and walking. Initial health education and psychosocial evaluation is also done at this phase.

Phase II starts within one to two weeks after hospital discharge. Group exercises are done three times a week for 16 sessions. Education, counseling and behavioral services are also conducted. Exercises under this phase includes aerobics, calisthenics, resistance or strength training among others.

Lastly, in Phase III, patients are evaluated if they can already go back to work. For those who are unemployed or retired, they can re-enroll if the doctors feel they still need to continue with their program. Patients can be referred to physical medicine and rehabilitation doctor if there is a need for occupational therapy.

Initial medical evaluation and history taking (Intake process) takes place before entering Phase II or III of the Cardiac Rehab Program. Similarly, all medical and diagnostic procedures undergone will be recorded and taken into consideration. This will help in the creationof an individualized cardiac rehabilitation program. A patient will be advised on four foundations: Exercise Training & Preparation; Nutrition & Presence of Risk factors; Psychosocial Aspect and education.

The rehabilitation programis designed to support the recovery from recent cardiovascular event or procedure to be able to return to the daily activities, job and hobbies. It will be tailored to personal needs, abilities and interests.

All sessions are medically supervised and are led by certified rehabilitation specialists and nurses. State-of-the-art monitoring equipment and a variety of exercise equipment are available at The Medical City Clark for safety and convenience.
