Army activates 6th Mechanized Infantry Battalion

CAMP O’DONNELL, Capas, Tarlac –– Philippine Army activated its 6thMechanized Infantry “Salaknib” Battalion as the armor component of the 1st Brigade Combat Team.

It will serve as an offshoot of the continuing Army capability upgrade to give rise to a modular force structure aimed at creating standardized, flexible and versatile elements capable of accomplishing its assigned task.

“True to your name Salaknib which means shield in Ilocano, this unit symbolizes protection, strength, and security as you serve as the rapid deployment force of the Mechanized Infantry Division responding to the requirements of the Philippine Army in the conduct of ground operations against emerging security threats,” Army Commanding General Lieutenant General Macairog Alberto said.

Lieutenant Colonel Von Albert Sumergido assumed as the first Commanding Officer of the battalion.

“With this development, the Philippine Army continues to expand its forces and upgrade its capabilities in order to best address the evolving security challenges and complex operational environment of the country,” Alberto emphasized.
